Emanuel Day Ritual: Honoring the Charleston Nine

Charleston9

On June17th of last year, nine lives were tragically taken from this world for no reason more than that a man did not like the color of their skin.  To honor their memory, the UUCG Racial Equity Organizing Team will hold a special commemoration to honor the lives lost that day at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

These murders were committed by a man who used the history of the Confederate flag to support his hate.  It is our hope that more people will begin to recognize those who have been victims of racism, when remembering Confederate history and its aftermath.

Join us to take part in a Cairn Building Ritual in their honor and remembrance.  The commemoration ritual will take place at the base of the Walk-Up Trail at Stone Mountain, and again at the top of the mountain (for those who choose to venture). We will be placing stones with their names written on them, facing the direction of Charleston. Feel free to bring any readings, poems, or quotes that you wish to share in honor of their memory.

The Cairn Building Ritual will take place on June 18, 2016 at 10am. Please dress for the weather, wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring water if you plan on walking with us to the top.
